What Size Power Station Do I Need for a Microwave?

A microwave is the classic example of why battery capacity and inverter output are different things. A microwave uses very little total energy (you run it for minutes, not hours) but requires a high-output inverter while it's running. This page explains the distinction and helps you size correctly.

A typical microwave draws 1,000–1,500 W while running but only for a few minutes at a time. The inverter output is the bottleneck — you need a station with at least 1,200–1,500 W of continuous AC output. Battery capacity can be modest: a 500 Wh station can run a 1,200 W microwave for roughly 20 minutes of actual heating time.

Considerente cheie

  • A microwave's running wattage (1,000–1,500 W) is far higher than its rated cooking wattage (700–1,000 W). The difference is wasted as heat in the magnetron. Always size based on the input/running wattage, not the output cooking power.
  • The inverter output is the critical spec, not the battery capacity. A 2,000 Wh station with only 500 W of AC output cannot run a microwave at all — it will trip immediately.
  • Microwaves have minimal surge, but the continuous load is high. Some power stations advertise a 'surge' rating much higher than their continuous rating — for a microwave, the continuous rating is what matters.
  • Running a microwave for 5 minutes uses only about 100 Wh of energy. The battery capacity requirement is small; the inverter requirement is large.

Exemple de autonomie

500 Wh station, 1,200 W microwave
Autonomie idealizată
25 min
500 Wh ÷ 1200 W
Autonomie realistă
21 min
× 0.85 eficiență

About 20 minutes of actual microwave heating time after efficiency losses. For reheating meals (2–3 min each), that's 6–10 meals. The key constraint is that the station must have 1,200+ W of continuous AC output.

1,000 Wh station, 1,200 W microwave
Autonomie idealizată
50 min
1,000 Wh ÷ 1200 W
Autonomie realistă
43 min
× 0.85 eficiență

About 42 minutes of heating time — plenty for a camping trip. Again, verify the station's continuous output rating is at least 1,200 W.

Considerente solare

  • Solar is largely irrelevant for microwave use — the load is short and high-power, so you're drawing from the battery. Solar helps recharge afterward.
  • A 100 W panel can recharge the 100 Wh used by a 5-minute microwave run in about 1–2 hours of good sun.

Considerente de cumpărare

  • The single most important spec is continuous AC output. If your microwave is 1,200 W, you need a station rated for at least 1,200 W continuous (not just surge).
  • Battery capacity can be modest — 500 Wh is enough for dozens of microwave uses. Don't overspend on capacity you don't need.
  • Some power stations have a 'X-Boost' or power-boost mode that raises the effective output for short periods. This can help with microwaves, but verify the sustained continuous rating.
