What Size Power Station Do I Need for a Laptop?

Laptops are relatively light loads, but the way you use them — charging a depleted battery vs. running an already-charged machine — changes the energy calculation. This page helps you size a station for remote work, travel, or backup.

A typical laptop draws 30–80 W while in use. A 300–500 Wh power station can provide multiple full laptop charges or run a laptop directly for 6–10+ hours. For a full day of remote work with other small devices, 500–1,000 Wh is a comfortable starting point.

Considerente cheie

  • A laptop's power adapter is rated for maximum draw (e.g., 65 W or 100 W), but the actual consumption is usually lower — a laptop with a full battery sitting idle may draw only 10–20 W, while one charging a depleted battery under heavy load may hit the adapter's full rating.
  • Many modern laptops charge via USB-C Power Delivery. If your power station has a USB-C PD output, you can skip the AC inverter entirely and charge more efficiently.
  • Once your laptop's internal battery is full, its draw drops sharply. The 'hours' you set in the calculator should reflect active charging time, not total time the laptop is open.
  • Gaming laptops and mobile workstations can draw 100–200 W under load — significantly more than a typical ultrabook.

Exemple de autonomie

Autonomie idealizată
8h 20m
500 Wh ÷ 60 W
Autonomie realistă
7h 5m
× 0.85 eficiență

About 7 hours of continuous charging. Since a typical laptop battery is 50–80 Wh, this is enough for 5+ full charges.

1,000 Wh station, 60 W laptop
Autonomie idealizată
16h 40m
1,000 Wh ÷ 60 W
Autonomie realistă
14h 10m
× 0.85 eficiență

About 14 hours of continuous power — enough for a full work day and then some, or multiple laptop charges plus phone and accessories.

Considerente solare

  • A 100 W portable solar panel can keep up with laptop charging in good sun, making a small station effectively infinite for daytime work.
  • For a remote-work setup, pair a 500–1,000 Wh station with a 100–200 W panel for all-day capability.

Considerente de cumpărare

  • If your laptop charges via USB-C PD, look for a station with a high-wattage USB-C output (60–100 W) to avoid inverter losses.
  • You don't need a large inverter for a laptop — 100–150 W of AC output is plenty. Focus your budget on capacity (Wh) rather than output (W).
  • Consider what else you'll power alongside the laptop — phone, Starlink, lights — and size for the combined load.
