How Many Solar Panels Do I Need?
The number of solar panels you need depends on your annual electricity consumption, your target solar coverage, your local solar yield, and the wattage of each panel. A household using 6,000 kWh/year at a yield of 1,200 kWh/kWp/yr needs roughly a 5 kWp system — about 12 panels rated at 450 W each.
Key Factors
Panel count depends on four primary inputs:
- Annual electricity consumption (kWh/year) — the total energy your household uses in a year.
- Target solar coverage (%) — what percentage of your annual consumption you want solar to produce.
- Expected solar yield (kWh/kWp/yr) — how much energy each kWp of panels produces per year at your location.
- Panel wattage (W) — the rated power of each individual panel. Higher-wattage panels mean fewer panels for the same system size.
Worked Examples
The table below shows estimated system sizes and panel counts at a yield of 1,200 kWh/kWp/yr, 100% coverage, and 450 W panels — all computed using the Home Solar Sizer engine:
| Annual energy use | PV system size | Panel count (450 W) | Actual DC array | Est. annual production |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4,000 kWh/yr | 3.4 kWp | 8 | 3.6 kWp | 4,320 kWh |
| 6,000 kWh/yr | 5.0 kWp | 12 | 5.4 kWp | 6,480 kWh |
| 10,000 kWh/yr | 8.4 kWp | 19 | 8.6 kWp | 10,260 kWh |
Examples use the Home Solar Sizer engine: yield = 1200 kWh/kWp/yr, 450 W panels, 100% coverage, 1.2 DC/AC ratio.
How the Estimate Works
The calculation follows three steps, each using the same engine as the Home Solar Sizer: (1) PV sizing: recommendedPVSize = annualConsumption × coverage ÷ yield. (2) Panel count: panelCount = CEIL(recommendedPVSize × 1000 ÷ panelRatedPower). (3) Annual production: estimatedProduction = actualDcArray × yield, where actualDcArray = panelCount × panelRatedPower ÷ 1000.
What the Result Means
The panel count gives you a preliminary planning reference. The actual DC array (panel count × panel wattage) is usually slightly larger than the planning PV size because panels come in whole units. At 6,000 kWh/year with 450 W panels, you get 12 panels producing a 5.4 kWp array that generates an estimated 6,480 kWh/year — slightly more than your consumption due to panel-count rounding.
Limitations & Assumptions
- Actual roof dimensions, shading, and orientation are NOT factored in — these can significantly change the final system design.
- Solar yield varies by location, roof pitch, azimuth, and local climate. The 1,200 kWh/kWp/yr value is a typical mid-range European assumption, not a universal default.
- Panel wattage is an input — modern residential panels range from 350–550 W. Using higher-wattage panels reduces the panel count.
- Local regulations, grid connection rules, and structural load limits may restrict system size.
- An installer's final design may differ from this estimate based on on-site conditions and product availability.
- Annual production is an energy-balance estimate — it does not account for self-consumption patterns, battery storage, or time-of-use matching.
